Category: Animal House
So we have a puppy. We got him in August. It took a few months to
house train him; guess boy dogs are harder to train. Since then he is
usually good with not going in the house. He will have an occasional
accident. He'll go in the house if we don't take him out, or sometimes he
will go out, not go outside, and then come back in and go. Other than the
occasional accidents, he's usually good with this. My mother is away this
week and next week, and since she left, he has been backsliding. He will
poop in the house when we're not home and on my watch. I take him out
every few hours, but he's still going in the house a lot. He knows it's
wrong because he will try and hide it. I just am not sure why he is doing
so good and then all of a sudden he is backsliding. Could it be because my
mom being away has him off track?
Not popular with the politically correct types but my parents used to show the
dog the pooh and beat its ass. Now I wouldn't go for the full on beat down but
maybe something. Maybe put its nose in the pooh, scream "No! Bad Dog1!" at it
and pick it up and toss it outside.
I know a screaming chick tends to make humans and other animals pay
attention.
But I've not had a dog as an adult, so don't know how it's properly done. And
I'm pretty sure PETA does not endorse what I said. I'm merely saying what
happened in the 70s, and maybe desperate times call for desperate measures?
Leo, just because something happened in the seventies, does not mean its the
right thing now. KKK rallies happened in the seventies. Probably not a good
response to black lives matter now.
Apple, it could be a few things. It could be that he's upset about your mother
leaving, and it has him off his schedule. If so, play with him a lot, get to know
him, make him see you as just as much his friend as your mother. All the while,
keep taking him out, and when he goes outside, reward him with a treat and
lots of praise.
It could be that he doesn't see you as a symbol of authority, and so he
doesn't feel he has to obey you. If so, keep him on his leash, and only let him
do things he likes when he's done something for you. So make him sit, or go to
the bathroom outside, and then let him play with a toy, but always keep him on
his leash so that he realizes that the only way he's going to get to have fun, is
to get you to let him have fun. Then he'll see you as a symbol of authority.
It could also be that you're simply shitty at being a dog owner. If its that one,
I don't know what to tell you.
What he said.
And now, you can't complain about what Cody said or anyone else who actually
owns a dog comes along and says to you, because mine was technically the
worst. lol if it were me I'd not do what I said in post 2 but have gone and
Googled it on the Internet.
See? Now you can't hate on the advice givers like Cody and whoever else, now
that you probably got upset at my Post 2, you can give Cody and whoever else
writes on here a fair hearing. See if that works for a change.
You should only tell a dog off for doing a poo in the house if you catch them in the act, never after. They don't have a concept of time, and having done things in the past. It's like if a dog is chewing, you can tell them off. But if you come home to find the sofa chewed up, it's just pointless telling them off for that, it will actually hurt them.
And cody is spot on with his advice.
Holly and Cody are right. IF you punish an animal after the behavior, because they don't have a sense of time, they won't understand what they're being punished for, which will actually lead to the behavior becoming worse, as well as other bad behaviors popping up. Which leads to Cody's advice. Positive rewards for good behavior often work better than punishments for bad.
Yeah, my stepfather does that. His dog is 4 years old and still goes to the
bathroom in the house and he's been doing that ever since they got him. But
they didn't train him right. He would pee or poop in the house, my stepfather
would come home like 5 hours later, and punish him. He also hit the dog with
a newspaper and the dog would yelp. The hitting with the newspaper doesn't
hurt them; the noise just scares them, or that's what I was told. Yeah when
our puppy used to poop in the house once my mom would have him smell it
and she put him in his cage.
yeah, what cody said.
Hitting the dog with the newspaper doesn't scare him? Bullshit. any person who thinks it's okay to beat an animal like that doesn't need to own one. puppies are not human children and don't think the way we do about time, as Holly pointed out. agree with Cody.
do you give him free reign in the house wen you're away? I suggest crating him. Dogs instinctively don't want to soil where they sleep. So you crate him, take him out, make sure he goes, then give him free time when you let him back in. That's how I house broke dogs and fosters over the years.
Also don't allow him free food and water, keep those on a schedule, that better helps you pin point when he'll need to go potty as well.
hmm, I haven't thought of that but that's what it says on my In A Dog's Eyes
book. thanks for the tip, nat!
excellent suggestions.
Wow I never considered the idea of not free-feeding subhuman life forms. But
mainly I've kept birds which are free-fed except those who are done for shows,
and some of us have ethical considerations about showing birds.
But anyhow that sounds like a really good bit of information about not free-
feeding ... at least that's a mistake I'd have made with an animal.
I agree with Cody and Nat.
Yes Cody and Natalie is how we house trained our pets.
Also, if you don't want things chewed, don't leave them to be.
all of you but leo have good points. if the step father's dog lives with this puppy and gets away with it, then what's to stop the new dog.
after the puppy poops or pees in your house get either bitter apple or nature's miracle. when the mess has been cleaned, saturate the area with that stuff. they won't go back in the same area again. dogs poop where they smell it. they don't know that the finest oriental rug is any different then the grassy yard. they smell that lovely perfume of a previous visitor and they go.
also dogs thrive on routine. they are basically four legged toddlers. feed two times a day at the same time. after ten minutes take the food away. put out water. after it has been drunk in the same amount of time the pup can say bye bye to that. then, 20 minutes after food and drink, take the dog out. stay out at least ten minutes. then crate the dog. in two hours do the same thing. in all cases if they do their business they can play out of the crate. if not, back to their doggie room. after a while, they learn, and pretty quickly too, that to win the game they have to play by the rules. works the same with toilet training sans the crate of course.
I forgot to say, alwayswhen leaving a puppy alone at home, tie it up or crate it. there are too many things they can get in to that will either hurt them or your pocketbook if yu take them to the vet. of course also at night you don't have to do the every two hour thing with relieving. if you're up do it. in a week or so you will both be happy campers.
